One research Post-Doctoral Fellowship is opened at the Engineering Department of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro within the I&D project MixAR - Adaptive Mixed Reality System for Archaeological Sites.
The main goal of this project is to develop a Mixed Reality (MR) system to visualize in situ virtual reconstructions of archaeological sites that are seamlessly merged with the real scene, thus providing a more real and contextualized perception of the site. In this context, it will be defined a new methodology to manage the level of mixing between the real and the virtual scene, identifying in each instant the approach to use (Augmented Reality or Augmented Virtuality) as well as defining the way how the transitions between the approaches are made. The MR content must be defined by the archaeologists by means of easy-to-use tools since they are not experts on how to build virtual environments. Consequently, it will be developed an authoring tool that will allow archaeologists to define the virtual reality scene to use in the MR visualization experience. The work plan comprises the following tasks:
· To participate in the tracking module development;
· To define an adaptive mixed reality methodology;
· To develop /adapt the rendering module;
· To develop a mixed reality experience authoring tool;
· To integrate the software components in a unique system.
The selected candidate will play an important role in the definition and implementation of the adaptive mixed reality methodology, participating also in all development tasks, and shall act as the responsible for the development of the entire system.
The work will be carried out at the Engineering Department of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Portugal, under the supervision of Professor Luís Gonzaga Mendes Magalhães.
The position is for 9 months, with estimated beginning in April / May 2014. The fellowship contract may be renewed until the end of the project (30^th june 2015).
The fellowship amounts to 1495/month, according to table of values for the scholarships awarded directly by the FCT, IP. (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer/check or equivalent modality.
The applicants should have a PhD in Computer Science, with a PhD work developed in an area relevant to the project or with a good knowledge in the Computer Vision and Computer Graphics areas. Participation in Research projects is an advantage. The applicants should have a good publication record in areas relevant to the project.
*This call for applications is open from March 28 to April 10, 2014.* Applications must be formalized necessarily by sending the application form accompanied by the following documents: detailed Curriculum Vitae, copies of academic certificates and copy of other documents considered relevant. It should be used the application form Mod4_BIUTAD-Formulário de Candidatura a Bolsa de Investigação,requested by email to Vice-Reitoria para a Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (vr_cti@utad.pt). The applications should be sent preferably by e-mail to lmagalha@utad.pt <mailto:lmagalha@utad.pt> or in alternative by standard mail to: Luís Gonzaga Mendes Magalhães Departamento de Engenharias ECT Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro Quinta de Prados 5000-801 Vila Real.
The selection criteria to be used are the following: Academic curriculum (60%) and prior research experience (40%) relevant to the project. Each component will be evaluated on a scale 0-20. The final score will be also expressed on a scale 0-20, rounded to the nearest tenth. In case of a tie, the candidates, in this situation, will be invited by email for an interview.
The final ordered score list will be placed in a public and visible place in the Engineering Department of the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, and the selected candidate will be notified by email and by formal letter.
